December 10 Board Meeting

Hello community,

Hola comunidad,

The Derrick Sanderlin Resolution and discussion of the SRO (School Resource Officer/School Police) program has had ongoing community support since June 2020. To further demonstrate how important ending the contract between SJUSD and SJPD is to our community, there is direct action (protest/ car caravan) being taken this Thursday, December 10th. We hope that in addition to participating in the protest or caravan you can email a written comment and join the meeting this Thursday (12/10) at 6pm to demand an end to the school-to-prison pipeline.

We expect that there will be many comments in support of the SRO program, so it is more crucial than ever to make our voices heard. It is possible that police and SROs will be on the call as well, and we want everyone to feel safe and comfortable participating. If you do not want to share your name under these circumstances, you can join the meeting under an alias when you log in. The meeting facilitators will call on you by the name you enter, so be sure to listen for it!

You can also share your comment with us ahead of time and we will read it anonymously at the meeting. To do this, please email your comment to sju.equitycoalition@gmail.com by 12pm on 12/10 with the subject line "anonymous comment for 12/07". Please make sure your comment is one minute long, and include any information about your identity and role in the community that you would like us to share. We will not share your name.

Sample Script(s):

  • Good evening, my name is [ ... ], I am [role in community], and I am sharing this public comment in solidarity with the community members who are protesting at the SJUSD Headquarters right now, who are demanding that you vote no on the MOU and instead agendize and pass the Derrick Sanderlin Resolution! This resolution calls for the redistribution of funds from SRO’s to student needs. Students in SJUSD have also written the Diversify Our Narrative Resolution, which calls for more books written by BIPOC authors and can be fulfilled by the funds previously from SRO’s. According to the Black Lives Matter Resolution that you unanimously passed, it was resolved that the lives of Black students and students of other marginalized communities be prioritized by the district. In order to not violate the Black Lives Matter Resolution, all legacies of white supremacy and racism should be eradicated from the structure of our schools, which includes police, policing practices and white centered curriculum. We demand you agendize and pass these resolutions by January 14th and begin our community planning process.
